Characteristics

This product is a colorless, clear or almost clear liquid.

Pharmacological Action

This product is a drug for uterine contraction, containing oxytocin and vasopressin. The function to uterus is the same as that of oxytocin, and the vasopressin has anti-diuretic and blood pressure-increasing effects.

Indications

A drug for uterine contraction, use for inducing labor, postpartum uterine bleeding, and retained placenta, etc..

Dosage and Administration

Subcutaneous, intramuscular injection: Single dosage, for dog 0.2-1 ml (2-10 IU), for cat 0.2-0.5 ml (2-5 IU), or follow veterinarian's order.

For dog, 5-20 IU

1.Enhance uterine contractions during labor

Subcutaneous injection, 0.5-3 IU every 30-60 minutes, preferably adjusted according to the results of uterine contraction monitoring.

2.Treatment of uterine atony

If there is no fetus in the birth canal, the cervix is dilated, and fetal and maternal obstruction is ruled out, subcutaneous injection with xytocin (5-20 IU, dose adjusted according to animal size). If there is no response after 30 minutes of subcutaneous injection, repeat injection, at the same time, 10% Glucose can be slowly injected intravenously. If there is still no response after another 30 minutes, the subcutaneous injection can be repeated again. Some literature recommends slow intravenous injection of Calcium Gluconate (2-10 ml, meanwhile monitor the electrocardiogram to prevent bradycardia or arrhythmia). If drug treatment is ineffective, cesarean section is required.

3.Induce milk discharge

For secondary agalactia, subcutaneous injection of Oxytocin, 0.25-1 IU (total dose) every 2 hours. Remove the puppy 30 minutes after injection and encourage it to suck, or gently massage the mammary gland.

4.Auxiliary treatment of acute postpartum metritis

Female dog/cat begin to use broad-spectrum antibiotics that effectively penetrate reproductive tract tissue, if the pet is dehydrated or in shock, fluid therapy should be given. If labor occurs within 24 hours, Oxytocin 0.5-5 IU (total dose) can be injected subcutaneously. Dinoprost (0.25 mg/kg, subcutaneous injection) can be used at any time to promote uterine emptying.

5.Promote uterine involution after manual reduction of prolapsed uterus:

Uterine reduction can be tried with fingers under general anesthesia and/or epidural anesthesia. If tissue is severely swelling, hypertonic fluids (such as 50% Glucose or Mannitol) can be used to assist reduction. Some cases require episiotomy for successful reduction. After reduction, 0.5-5 IU Oxytocin to be injected subcutaneously to promote uterine involution. If the uterus cannot be reduced manually, laparotomy may be required. If tissue damage is severe, the risk of uterine vascular rupture and hemoperitoneum increases, and ovariohysterectomy should be performed at this time.

Anesthetize the pet and apply sterile lubricant liberally to exposed tissues. Pressurized irrigate the uterine horns with sterile saline. If necessary, Mannitol or Hypertonic Saline can be used to relieve edema before attempting reduction. After the uterus is involuted, inject 5-10 IU (total dose) of Oxytocin subcutaneously to promote uterine involution. If the uterus remains in place within 24 hours, re-prolapse is not likely because the cervix should be closed

For cat, 5-10 IU

1.Promote uterine involution after manual reduction of prolapsed uterus

Dosage for dog as reference.

2.Treatment of primary uterine atony

Dosage for dog as reference.

3. Auxiliary treatment of acute postpartum metritis

While waiting for culture and drug sensitivity results, female cat begin to use broad-spectrum antibiotics that effectively penetrate reproductive tract tissue.

If Dinoprost can be used, (0.25 mg/kg, subcutaneous injection) to promote uterine emptying.

4. Induce milk discharge: For secondary agalactia, subcutaneous injection of Oxytocin, 0.25-1 IU (total dose) every 2 hours. Remove the puppy 30 minutes after injection, then encourage it to suck, or gently massage the mammary gland. Meantime, subcutaneous injection of Metoclopramide (0.1-0.2 mg/kg every 12 hours, a dopamine antagonist) to promote milk secretion. Treatment is usually effective within 24 hours.

Adverse Reactions

According to prescribed usage and dosage, no adverse reactions have been observed.

Precautions

1. During labor, if the birth canal is abnormal, or malposition, or the cervix has not yet opened, it is contraindicated.

2. When large doses is used, high blood pressure, oliguria, and abdominal pain may occur occasionally.
